—88 STAR JEWELS

Finding Magic in Meaning

Rebecca, a working mom and vintage fine jewelry enthusiast, was looking to take her side hustle from daydream to dream job.

01

BRAND STORY

The 88 Star brand is as personal as it is poetic. Inspired by Rebecca’s love for vintage jewelry from the east and west, the brand finds magic in meaning as it carefully curates 19th century motifs, stories and symbols from both corners of the world.

02

THE LOGO

The logo is inspired by 19th. century kalograms, particularly the work of Chicago–based jewelry engraver J. M. Bergling (1866–1933) who created thousands of signets, monograms, and ciphers. The mark features two 8s laid in a double knot pattern represent the lucky number 88: homophonous with 發 (fa) or fortune in Chinese and the year of Rebecca’s birth and origin of the brands name. The double knot also has a Celtic feel to it, with the intersection of the double eights featuring an 8 pointed star as commonly seen in Victorian period settings. In concert, the symbol marries antique European and Asian motifs that share many commonalities and inspire the pieces Rebecca curates.

03

DESIGN ELEMENTS

Meaningful symbolism was brought into every element of the brand—marrying east and west and curating connections to Rebecca’s jewelry, culture, family and love for symbolism and story.

The color palette is inspired by acrostic symbolism found in vintage gemstone settings and each represents a member of her family—which she says inspires her shop and love for heirlooms.

Modern typefaces add sophistication balance out the brand’s vintage origins with modern motifs.
